KLAASWAAL - On Saturday 16 November, you can enjoy the special concert 'Orbital' by the Klaaswaals Symphonic Wind Orchestra conducted by Niels Verbeek and Arie Stolk in collaboration with the professional percussion ensemble Havelok in sports hall De Bongerd.

The programme includes various beautiful, well-known and sometimes lesser-known compositions on the theme of the universe, the earth and distant destinations. The highlight is 'Orbital' by John Psathas, a spectacular concert work for orchestra, 4 percussionists, audio track and live electronic effects. Havelok is

a professional percussion ensemble consisting of Rens Rutten, Antonio Gutiérrez Rubio, Hugo Pereira and our own conductor Niels Verbeek. With contemporary music as a starting point, they want to appeal to a wider audience. They are surprising, accessible, virtuoso and the pieces they play are often influenced by world music, minimalism, groovy rhythms and electronics.

These influences will certainly be heard during the concert. This concert is also Niels' farewell concert. He has been offered a great position at the National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin, Ireland. During this concert, the baton will be wielded by both Niels and Arie Stolk.

Percussion workshop

That same Saturday, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, we will also be organizing a challenging workshop for percussionists of all ages and levels in collaboration with Havelok. During this workshop, participants will work with instruments such as the djembe and the dundun. Basic techniques will be taught to get different sounds from the drum, such as bass, open tone and slap.

There will also be room for improvisation and technique. The new percussion skills learned will be used when rehearsing the piece 'African Symphony'. Any percussionist can register for the workshop. Being able to read music is useful, but not required.
