Superluminal (percussion sextet, audio track - from Between Zero and One)
Overview
One of the pieces/works from the concert-length show "Between Zero and One" created in collaboration with New Zealand's Strike Percussion.
Superluminal is an adaptation of the 3rd part of Songs for Simon - "Demonic Thesis". Adapting this would most likely have failed if it wasn't for Leni Sulusi (one of the members of Strike, and coincidentally an incredible sportsman - see the image gallery). There's a drum part in Demonic Thesis which I never had to worry about (in terms of playability) because it sat on a pre-recorded backing track. As I didn't need, or ever plan, to notate the drumset part I never really bothered to look into it and see what it was doing. I just worked on it until it sounded how I wanted it. Strike were keen to include this piece, and for me to adapt, so the first hurdle was reconciling the drum part to something playable, while keeping the intensity and energy of the original. Here's a page of what the original part looked like in Logic:

Not really playable. So I worked with Leni to make the part human-friendly. He was incredible, calm, super-efficient, with amazing playing capabilities. It eventually looked like this (drumset is player 4). Much more playable but no means a walk in the park.....
